Signed by Magnin, the esteemed clockmaker, and MV, a skilled bronzier of the period, this piece reflects the Napoleon III era’s love for symbolism and classical refinement. The composition is a harmonious duet of allegory and craft:

On one side, a youthful vintner, basket overflowing with grapes, raises his hand in triumph, an ode to autumn’s abundance and the joy of wine-making. Opposite him stands a graceful harvest maiden, arms full of wheat, an emblem of fertility, summer, and the sacred rhythm of the earth.

Between them rests the enamel dial, soft white and adorned with hand-painted floral garlands, its Roman numerals counting quiet hours in a timeless scene. The gilded spelter case features ornate scrolls and acanthus leaves, blending elegance with the charm of rural life
