Japanese Meiji–Taishō Porcelain Incense Burner by Tsukimoto, c. 1890–1920

An antique Japanese porcelain incense burner, dating from the late Meiji to early Taishō period, circa 1890–1920. Modeled after an archaic Chinese fangding form, the piece features a rectangular body raised on four legs, side handles, a removable lid, and a sculptural guardian lion / Foo Dog finial.

The decoration reflects the late 19th-century Sino-Japanesque export style, with hand-painted scholar figures, floral details, green and iron-red tones, and gilded accents inspired by Chinese bronze vessels and Qing-style enamel decoration. Inside, the piece retains its original interior-bolted gilded brass smoke vent and visible historic incense patina, adding to its authenticity and character.

The base is hand-signed in red overglaze with the three-character mark 月本造, read as Tsukimoto zō, meaning “Made by Tsukimoto.” Complete with its original lid and showing no visible structural damage, this is a collectible Japanese export incense burner with strong decorative and historical appeal.
